Geo Suite Mapper

Mapper is one of the integrated modules of Geo Suite Tool Kit.  It is used for viewing all project data imported into the project database and uses the standard thematic layered architecture to view data layers individually or collectively.  Mapper provides the import mechanism to blend together heterogeneous data sets belonging to different datums and projections into one project view through one central coordinate reference system.

This provides the direct benefit of users not having to condition data prior to importing it into a project database.  All project data is stored within the project database, referenced to the CRS provided by the user at the time of input.  However, the map view views the data in any user-selected CRS, which can differ from the CRS used to import the data.   As such all the project data is transformed ‘on-the-fly’ to the map view CRS.  The transformation model and parameters applied are user defined for each thematic layer of the project.

File formats

The application provides an inventory of standard file formats including, but not limited to:

  • AutoCAD .dxf and .dwg files
  • ESRI .shp files
  • Map Info files
  • Map Gen coastlines of the world
  • All major raster and vector images, including .bmp, .jpg, .tiff.
    (These files can be either automatically geo referenced or use their real world referenced equivalents)
  • Microsoft Excel, .csv and .xls files
  • Digital Elevation Models, GeoTIFF, USGS etc.
  • Standard ASCII .txt files.

Geo Mapper offers the following functions:

  • By blending heterogeneous data sets together into one common reference system provides the ability to view the entire project data in a single coordinate reference system. This is achieved by performing on-the-fly coordinate operations from the project layer CRS to map view CRS. Hence the data can be viewed in numerous ways from one common source.
  • Common tools to query and edit the data
  • Distance computations between points and calculating areas.
  • Change style and labelling of map features.
  • Switch ON and OFF and re-order any of the thematic layers within the project tree.
  • Query any of the map objects shown on the screen.
  • Export the entire project to enable project exchange between users. This function enables the project to be exported such that it can be shared between groups of users.
  • Export individual layers. Any of the individual thematic layers within the project can be exported as an image file in one of several recognized formats, namely: .shp,.jpg, .bmp, .tif.

Map view CRS and ‘on-the-fly’ transformations

All data stored within a Geo Suite project is geo-referenced to the original CRS in which it was loaded.   However, it is possible to view all project data geo-referenced to a user-selected CRS (other than the default WGS84 CRS).   Where the map view CRS is different to the original CRS Geo Suite Mapper employs an ‘on-the-fly’ coordinate transformation model to change the data for viewing purposes only.   Using the Project → Coordinate Reference System option the viewing CRS can be selected.  A list of pre-defined map view CRS’ can be identified and any one item from that list can be made ‘active’ as required.

Late binding architecture

The application adopts a late binding architecture when assigning a coordinate transformation model to convert between layer CRS and view CRS’ . Therefore, the user can change this option for each individual thematic layer contained within the project.   The properties panel enables the Transformation details to be changed to any other of the recognised models contained within the EPSG database via Geo Suite DB.

A range of standard ‘GIS’ style tools are provided.  These include the ability to change the appearance of the data contained within the layer, e.g. colour, width, transparency:

Distance measuring is provided.  A variety of different range units can be used to compute distances between points.
