Seis Line – Import

When a Geo Suite Project is created tat by default it is assigned a coordinate reference system of WGS 84 [4326] to the Geo Suite Mapper viewing tool.  The new project has an empty project database into which project data will be added.   One of the data types honored is Seismic Positioning Data.

Geo Suite Mapper provides an inventory of all commonly recognizes positioning data exchange formats, that include:

  • UKOOA P1/78, P1/84, P1/90, P1/11
  • SEG P1,
  • SEG-Y
  • SPS (r and s),
  • SSH

The positioning data is imported into Geo Suite project database using either, one of the recognized decoders specified above or the manual entry wizard (designed for data sets that are non-compliant). When common exchange formats are read the metadata will be extracted from the header block, provided it is present.  This is stored within the main seismic database for that data set.

Data geo-referencing

Geo-referencing is an integral part of the import process.  The import wizard requires that the positioning data be assigned a coordinate reference system that best describes the reference system of the positioning listed within the data block(s).  Incorrect select will mis-position the data horizontally. All positioning data imported to the project database will be stored in its original format.  No data conversions of the original data are performed as part of the import process.

CRS definition

The seismic positioning data can be viewed within the Mapper module referenced to a different user selected CRS. An ‘on-the-fly’ coordinate transformation is performed to convert the data between stored CRS and viewing CRS  (See viewing stage).

late binding datum transformation architecture is used.  This means that the CRS definitions within the Geo Suite geodetic database do not have the coordinate transformation parameters assigned as part of the 2D geographical CRS definition.  As such a coordinate transformation model can be assigned to the 2D geographical CRS independently of its definition.  This allows the necessary flexibility demanded of the geomatics profession.

File format checker

Files imported into the project database are checked to determine whether they  comply to one of the data exchange formats recognized within the Geo Suite inventory.

As part of the process a set of reports are generated establishing to which format(s) the import files comply.  Should the import file comply with none of the recognized file formats the function activates the Text Import Wizard that enables the analyst to create a user-defined import format.
