Geo Mapper

Geo Mapper is an integrated mapping package using a thematic layered architecture. The package provides a simple mechanism to blend together heterogeneous data sets belonging to different datums and projections into one project viewed through one central coordinate reference system. This provides the direct benefit of users not having to condition data prior to the import process. As such all data is internally stored in with respect to one common reference system, namely WGS84.

Features & Screenshots

The application recognizes an inventory of standard file formats including, but not limited to:

  • AutoCAD .dxf and .dwg files
  • ESRI .shp files
  • Map Info files
  • Map Gen coastlines of the world
  • All major raster images, including .bmp, .jpg, .tiff.
(These files can be either automatically geo referenced or use their real world referenced equivalents)
  • Microsoft Excel, .csv and .xls files
  • Digital Elevation Models, GeoTIFF, USGS etc.
  • Standard ASCII .txt files.
  • Seismic navigation exchange formats, including:  UKOOA P1/78, P1/84, P1/90, SEG-P1, SPS and user-defined.
(A unique user defined file format Wizard is provided to define file formats during the import process)

Geo Mapper offers the following functions:

  • By blending heterogeneous data sets together into one common reference system leads to another facility of being able to view the data in any coordinate reference system required. This is achieved by storing all data in one common WGS84 format and performing on-the-fly datum transformations and projections. Hence the data can be viewed in numerous ways from one common source.
  • A series of common tools to query and edit the data in addition to computing distances between points and calculating areas.
  • Export the entire project. This function enables the project to be exported such that it can be shared between groups of users.
  • Export individual layers. Any of the individual thematic layers within the project can be exported as an image file in one of several recognized formats, namely: .shp,.jpg, .bmp, .tif.

Map view CRS and ‘on-the-fly’ transformations

All data stored within a Geo Suite project is geo-referenced to the original CRS in which it was loaded.   However, it is possible to view all project data geo-referenced to a user-selected CRS (other than the default WGS84 CRS).   Where the map view CRS is different to the original CRS Geo Mapper employs an ‘on-the-fly’ coordinate transformation model to change the data for viewing purposes only.   Using the Project → Coordinate Reference System option the viewing CRS can be selected.

The coordinate transformation model used to convert between CRS’ uses a late binding architecture.  As such the user is able to change this option for each individual thematic layer contained within the project.   The properties panel enables the Transformation details to be changed to any other of the recognised models contained within the EPSG database via Geo DB.

Printing functionality

Geo Mapper offers functionality to generate plots of any of the map views created by the user.  The print mode enables custom designed maps to be created and stored for later use.   The map template enables a range of different features to be added, including:

  • North Arrows
  • Company Logos
  • Text boxes for general annotation
  • Key box
  • Geodetic parameters box

The scale of the map to be printed can also be set from within the print template.  However, this also becomes a function of the printer to which the map is being sent and the paper sizes selected.
