Geodetic Framework – User Defined CRS’

User-defined CRS’

The creation of user-defined coordinate reference system and or coordinate transformation is a task regularly performed and is done so out of the necessity to create a new system that is not currently offered within the pre-defined geodetic inventory.  All too frequently, they are also created because the operator did not realize that CRS was already defined within the current inventory.

Either way, the process is typically performed by individuals with little knowledge of geodesy or a feel for the positional errors that will be induced as a result of inappropriate parameters being used.  Furthermore, the names assigned to user-defined CRS’ bear little to no relevance to the geographical extent over which the CRS is designed for use or the geodetic datums and map projections contained within the definition.  Names should adopt recognized international approaches, for example, ISO or EPSG convention / schema.
